Thoreau, Henry David ~ Walden : First British Edition
Walter Scott, London : 1886
The correct First British printing published as one of 'The Camelot Classics series' by Walter Scott, London in 1886. The BOOK is is Very Good++ condition with the publisher's original red cloth-covered boards with black lettering and gilt titling. Light pushing at the spine ends with some inevitable fading of the spine colouring. Two small marks to the lower front cover with some light age related markings. The binding remain tight. Some offsetting to the end papers with a tiny red penned circle to the upper rear blank end-paper. Free from inscriptions and internally remarkably very clean. 4 pages of adverts to the rear as called for with later editions having eight pages. Now protected in a loose Mylar archival cover. There appears to be more than one version of this 1886 'first British' edition of Walden, varying in advertisements, bindings and even page numbers. However, Harding, in his 'Centennial Checklist of the Editions of Walden', states that this Walter Scott's printing, issued first in 1886, was the correct first original British edition. The earlier Edinburgh edition of 1884 was apparently distributed in England having been bound by David Douglas in Edinburgh from American sheets with a new title page and contents page. Regarding the 1886 edition, Borst cites only the red cloth binding in his description and makes no mention of the other blue cloth with paper label edition which is likely to have been a remainder binding. BAL gives no binding description (Borst A22a, BAL 20184. This is a very good copy of an uncommon edition. Collectible
CONDITION: Very Good++
