Small folio; decorative cloth-backed publisher's boards, spine lettered in brown; rose-coloured endpapers; housed in the custom-made slipcase; containing a frontis vignette; an illustration by Ray Hedger; and a tipped-in black and white photograph of Stanley Lawrence; followed by 41 full-page plates and a final title heading by Kathleen Lindsley; The BOOK is in Fine condition, the slipcase a little sunned at the extremities. Limited edition, of which 160 were for sale. The book was commissioned to mark the 50th exhibition of the Society of Wood Engravers. A wonderful collection containing examples of the artworks of wood-engravers working in the 1980s, with such artists as Simon Brett, Joan Hassall, Gwenda Morgan, Monica Poole, Sue Scullard and many others represented. The book comes with an obituary of Stanley Lawrence by Ian Mortimer, first published in The Independent, as well as a short essay on the society in the 1950s by Frank Martin, and an introduction by Simon Brett, who writes "in these pages, there is traditional work; past work by members no longer active; experiment in new materials; & the variety of expressive approaches that should be found and encouraged." A handsome publication celebrating this art form, in particularly fine condition
