The First UK printing published by Chapman & Hall Ltd., London in 1936. The BOOK is in near Fine condition with the original cloth binding, in the standard red-and-black snakeskin pattern used for Waugh's novels in this period, The 'Flexiback Binding' with extra reinforcement of rubberised linen tape at the inner hinges is present as issued. Very light rubbing and tiny splits to the extreme spine tips. The boards are clean with just a few tiny age related marks. The gilt titling to the spine remains very bright. Mild rubbing to the corner tips. Light toning to the text-block and extreme page edges. Free from inscriptions and erasures. The Frontispiece by Thomas Derrick is present. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ condition. Mild edge wear with two small closed tears at the upper spine folds. Some toning to the spine and edges but less than usually encountered. A tiny slither of loss at the upper spine tip and the corners. The edges are very slightly rubbed and creased in places. The wrapper design to the front panel reproduces the frontispiece artwork. The wrapper is protected in a removable Brodart archival cover. An increasingly scarce Waugh title which is a collection of eleven 'sad' short stories including the story 'Mr Loveday's Little Outing' which was successfully adapted for the TV in 2006. Collectible
