IN THE SCARCE E. MCKNIGHT KAUFFER DUSTWRAPPER.

WELLS, H. G. ~ Things to Come.

FIRST UK PRINTING. The Cresset Press, London: 1935.

8vo., navy blue publisher's cloth, black painted label gilt to upper cover and the same to spine; publisher's name in gilt direct to foot; together in the striking blue and black printed dustwrapper, with price punched away from front flap; THE BOOK with small dent to upper board and light pushing to spine tips; a little sunned at edges; some light offsetting to endpapers, otherwise, aside from some very minor spots throughout a very good + copy; THE WRAPPER toned, with nicks, chips and creases to edges and a large 1.5cm deep portion of loss to head of spine affecting the title lettering; completely unrestored internally. The wrapper is protected in a removable Brodart archival cover. FIRST UK EDITION. The film story based on material from Wells' earlier sci fi novel 'The Shape of Things to Come', published in 1933, which focuses on major war that leaves Europe devastated and threatened by the plague. The resulting society reverts to medieval levels of being, while a technological society is rebuilt and benevolent dictatorships are established, promoting science and abolishing religion. Though the novel is a work of fiction, many of Wells' predictions would later come true, such as the aerial bombing of whole cities and the developemtn of weapons of mass destruction. The screenplay adaptation was released the following year, directed by William Cameron Menzies. Wells was heavily involved in production, and often on set. Furthermore it was he who comissioned Arthur Bliss, then lecturer at the Royal Institution, to collaborate with him on the film score. Scarce with the dustwrapper.
