The First Appearance In Print With Illustrations By Warwick Goble
Wells, H.G. ~ War Of The Worlds : Pearson’s Magazine : VOL. III. And Vol. 1V : The First Appearance In Print With Illustrations By Warwick Goble
Pearson's Magazine : 1897
The First UK printing published by Pearson's Magazine, London in 1897. A 2 Vols. set : 'Vol. 111 May to June 1897' and 'Vol 1V July to Dec 1897'. The BOOKS retain their original decorated publisher's boards. The first volume comprises bound issues of the Pearson's Magazine from January to June 1897 and is in Very Good+ condition. All edges plain. Some pushing at the spine ends and early cracking to the hinges but the binding remains tight. Some age related markings to the covers but the art nouveau design remains quite bright. The second volume comprises bound issues of the Pearson's Magazine from July to December 1897 and is in Very Good- condition. All edges gilt. Some pushing at the spine ends and early cracking to the hinges. Cracking to the binding at pages 504-5 but the binding remains tight in the two sections. More marked age related markings to the covers with some rubbing in places and the art nouveau design is somewhat dulled. More marked toning to the spine than volume one. This title first appeared as a Pearson magazine serialisation and all nine serialised chapters of 'The War of the Worlds' are present with the striking B/W illustrations by Warwick Goble. A few very minor marks to the page edges places with one small closed tear to a page edge but not involving the text. Both books are free from bookplates, inscriptions and are protected in loose Mylar archival covers. The illustrations did not appear in the first UK trade edition which was published by Heinemann in the following year. These volumes also include several other illustrated works of fiction and non-fiction including a portion of 'Captains Courageous' and 'Tomb of His Ancestors' by Rudyard Kipling, and 'Tales of the High Seas' by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. A highlight of modern fiction and very recently televised by the BBC in addition to the numerous movie adaptations. Extremely scarce to find the original serialisation complete in the original publisher's original binding with only two complete sets recorded at auction in the last 20 years. More images available on request. Due to the weight of these two volumes, international postage will be at cost.
